Under the table employment is the safest bet, but not the most secure. the isolation leading to possible more questions due to small community might be an issue as well. A new identity would be very nice.

What are you talking about? Everyone's isolated in the mountains...and because of that no one will say "'oh there goes that creepy guy living all by himself!" No, if you isolated yourself in a regular small town, then yes. Trust me, in places like that no one gives a shit what you're doing...
