When it comes to The Death Penalty, I mostly sit here and remark on how oddly expensive it is within the American system. That being said, I support The Death Penalty, but how it's handled is worth discussing.
They believe that the death of the wrongdoers will leave a good example on others and thus, reduce the crime.
I mostly just see that spread a stronger sense of mob mentality, vigilantism, and a sense of Might Makes Right. Even if it does reduce crime it sets an example for more than just the 'victims' of it, and once a crime happens that the law doesn't support the death penalty for you'll see the line move with people's sentiments more than by any code of ethics that goes beyond that.
It also means that those who go the criminal route will go harder from knowing how much more they have to lose, and some may even go through with it as a last hurrah before "Suicide By Cop" instead of seeking help. If it's harder for them to live with themselves than rape someone from the tools around them being that much less than otherwise... it could account for some rapes.
There are also a lot of people who are often punished for a crime they did not really commit. This is found after years of them rotting in the prison, sometimes it is not even found out and they go through the entire life imprisonment.
I wonder sometimes how often innocent people being sent to jail turns them into criminals.
