dopamine fasting

https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20191115-what-is-dopamine-fasting

he cuts himself off from as many external stimuli as possible. He’ll stop eating, instead only drinking water to stay hydrated. He’ll ignore his phone, laptop screen and other tech devices. And he’ll try and avoid interacting with people as much as possible – including making eye contact.

Proponents of dopamine fasting believe that we have become overstimulated by quick ‘hits’ of dopamine from things like social media, technology and food. They say that by deliberately avoiding these common stimulants – which we see as pleasurable activities – we can decrease the amount of dopamine in our brain.

Then, after the fast, when we re-engage with these stimulants, we enjoy them more and our lives feel better.

Sinka believes that regular quick ‘hits’ of dopamine make us “become numb to it in the same way someone who consumes cocaine develops a tolerance”. “You’re trying to undo that built tolerance. That allows you to reflect and to look at the bigger picture, to reassess. When you start to re-engage all those different stimuli, they’re more engaging than they originally were.”

very interesting, may be some truth here.

That's interesting, I noticed it is extremely hard for me to not be on my phone or laptop. Maybe a good old digital detox might do me good. If I can somehow incorporate it into my life.

My view on this is more nuanced now, it's just a healthy instinct put into a framework so you should ignore everything except the core of the message which is to be less on your phone

Dopamine management and NoFap are just desperate attempts to feel in control.

It's interesting stuff. Like the article said, the dopamine fasting is similar in principle to a form of meditation. The research on meditation is overwhelmingly positive. There seems to be some importance to being able to "tune out," we weren't really evolved to be stimulated like we can be now.

I am considering getting into meditation, I am top anxious about doing the next thing and feel like it would do me good to slow down here and there and be okay with doing nothing for a bit.
