If you are to achieve this, you'll need someone who's already wealthy to invest in your ideas. When such a time arises you will need prototypes or very thorough designs. And to obtain such things you need to know what you're doing, hence you have a steep learning curve ahead of you.
As both a benefit and a hindrance, you've been liberated from the clutches of University. You've lost resources and structure, but in actuality such things were merely constraints - minimizing constraints expands the solution space. You're now afforded a more radical approach built on pure will genius, the radical genius. And, I assure you that what you want will require a radical mind.
You need practical mathematics for modeling your ideas and prototyping quickly.
Vector calculus will be necessary for any Electrical or Mechanical engineering you might do, specifically you need to understand the Gauss' Divergence Theorem and Stokes'/Kelvin-Stokes/Green's theorems'. These theorems are the foundations of Maxwell's Equations which I'm sure you've heard of but yet to really use.

Probability Theory will be necessary because it's the foundation of modeling information and also would be needed if you ever wanted to study QM. There is no better teacher than Kolmogorov, his text is short and concise.

Information theory will allow you to model the transfer of information, and conceptually it can be applied broadly. As in, you can model the way information moves through a circuit, wire, space, or a neurological system. You mentioned you are concerned with the transfer of energy and what it fundamentally is, information theory can do just that as you may rewrite a lot of physics in terms of information. Information theory actually comes out of statistical mechanics(thermodynamics) which deals with the study of entropy, hence the deep relationship between information and energy is applied. Below is Claude Shannon's paper that lunched the theory. I will also include a great overview of the history and context of the theory because it will be very useful to you. If you want a textbook I can recommend Arieh Ben-Naim's book - he also has a number of papers that may be of interest.

You will need a practical understanding of Electromagnetism
For the theory you need not look any further than Oliver Heaviside, you will also like him because he's a genius that defied the all the standards of the time. He came up with Vector Analysis and reformulated Maxwell's original 20 equations into only four, those are the four everyone learns today. His formulation is similar to Newtons, Newton invented Calculus to model the phenomenon he was witnessing and Heaviside formulated Vector Analysis to model the phenomenon he was witnessing. The difference is Heaviside was a high school drop out and did all his work from a spare room as his parents house whom he moved back in with after he quite his job as a telegrapher. Below are the three volumes and also Maxwell's publication that contains the original 20 equations.

The contemporary theory of EM is quantized but the above should get you by. If you want to go to the quantum level then Read Dirac(start with him), Heisenberg/Born/Jordan(Quantum Field Theory), and Landau(specifically his 4th volume).

I know you majored in Electrical Engineering while attending University so I am sure you can navigate those waters, but I do recommend studying the work of Steinmetz. He's a forgotten genius who is essentially responsible for the modern world in so far as the engineering of electricity and magnetism is concerned. He side by side Tesla in developing Alternating current among several really amazing mathematical conceptions and formulations that made EM theory practical and usable in industry - his methods are still very much the standard.
