You don't think the grin might be there for other reasons? Smiling out of fear of embarrassment isn't too uncommon, and emotional displays in aberrant individuals don't always conform to the usual ones. You ever talk to furries who don't want to be seen without their masks? Much like this one's story, the costume helps them be looked at for their construct identity instead of their vulnerable core. Check "Boomer"s eyes, he's dedicated to the bit, but not in a Kaufman-esque way.
"Boomer the Dog" could be more about making boom-booms than being almost 50.
Edit:
Dr Phil said:Now you don't really think you're part dog?
"Boomer" said:I in some way, I have to believe that I am. The circumstances over the years have shown me that there must be something there, as it's that strong of a thing for me.
Is this some sort of Sunk Cost issue? He could be doing all of these behaviors at this point despite a nagging voice saying he ought not to from having invested too much into the bit, namely his folks paying for him to live as a dog with a trust fund and otherwise being known by too many people in this way. Living the upkeep of the mistake, including duping yourself into it, may simply read to him as the easier, more pragmatic answer, or at the very least easier than the alternative: Admitting to the mistakes.
"It is such a quiet thing, to fall. But far more terrible is to admit it."
A real dog in human form wouldn't be eating dog food, that's mindlessly categorical (and an odd form of self-reinforcement for ideals). Otherwise his rationale seems fairly form fitting for typical Otherkin. Being on Dr. Phil in this fashion... has to be one of the most self-reinforcing things he could do. He might never get over it now.
Edit2:
Hahahaha wow watching Dr. Phil try to say that the furry lifestyle is okay, while not believing it, is pretty funny (2:35).
