This is a question that I have pondered for quite a bit. I myself lie somewhere in-between on this spectrum; I'm self aware of my own narcissism but have no shame and in fact am proud of it on some level. Grandiose narcissists are supposed to be more oblivious than me, but I definitely share more traits with them. I also happen to take issue with a lot of the issues of vulnerable narcissists.

To me, they're just annoying... It's seems like a sadomasochistic hell to live in, to have all that shame and bitterness and pessimism and an overall bleak viewpoint, yet still be very prideful and inconsiderate. It just seems to all be in bad taste. At least in grandiose narcissism you see an individual who isn't so bitter and has a lot of optimism and genuine confidence. The people I often associate with it are also people whose success I respect; Kanye, Trump, Steve Jobs. But vulnerable narcissists have this whole new layer of deciet that I think would take most people by surprise in a much worse way.

In my experience with people that had grandiose narcissist traits(myself included), I was able to at least have a good time with them and enjoy conversations. But vulnerable narcissists just seem like wimpy sociopaths with little social value on neither a superficial not real level and I suspect it is this type of narcissist that would end up shooting their school up.

That's not even to mention the havoc a vulnerable narcissist can wreak in a relationship because you cannot see it coming. I make my ego clear as day to my partners and say they can leave or live with it and if they do I try my best to be compatible with them. But to be a bitter shameful self awarely prideful yet still manipulative and mean and all of these things on the low-key. I'd argue that is worse.

But enough of me, what do you think?

Covert narcisscism is often a vehicle to a higher degree of perceived perfection. Your overt narcs(grandiose) are only grandiose as a coping/comfort mechanism. They are cocky because they need to be, because it implies success. Any person can become a overt narc with enough delusion and self patting on the back.

Covert narcisscissts have their egos inflated to such a massive point, that anything but an overwhelming success is a failure and even if they do succeed it is expected. There is no pride to be taken in accomplishments because they perceive them as minor in comparison to the image of themselves. 

Overt = high school A+ athlete that basks in his own glory, popular from clout chasing

Covert = the asian high school A+ athlete that disdains socializing in favor of more training, makes it to state, gets second place and commits suicide.

I'm biased but I find overt to be the less likeable of the two. Anyone can be an overt narc, it takes some success to truly be an engrossed covert narc. As your focus is on your flaws, while overts simply make excuses and gloss over them

Grandiose is worse 

there is a higher rate of white collar crime in America than any other kind. Large CEOs for example just kill people who get in the way. But somehow their hands stay clean. Or they steal intellectual property. Find loopholes in the law to benefit or manipulate, or manipulate government policies and other things like that to suit the welfare of their very large profitable cooperations who do more harm than good for the planet on many levels. 

Trump is a grandiose narc. 

Hitler was a grandiose narc accompanied with delusions. 

 Vulnerable narcs are more likely to impulsively react negatively to rejection and failure as these are things they can’t handle. But the crimes they’ll commit as a result happen on a lesser scale, just based on sheer statistics. 

There is more ore white collar crime than any other type or crime, these people are entitled and are willing to do whatever it takes to stay where they are at. They have more to lose so it makes sense. 

Vulnerable narc is your alkie father estranged from the family after a fight and comes home one night and shoots the kids in the face and strangles the mother after he learns she’s been fucking his brother. 

Grandiose narc, runs an oil company that obliterates the Gulf of Mexico and all sea life in it. And then spends all the money crawling their ways out of law suits instead of investing in cleaning up the damage they’ve made.
