I have to disagree here.
There's a lot of family pressure that goes into partner selection in Asia. In Korea, if your family has socioeconomic value, you're supposed to marry a guy who works for SKT or Hyundai, etc. A lot of times there is a degree of arrangement involved. Japan is a bit more progressive, but not totally different. A lot of times the women end up isolated and feeling emotionally unfulfilled, since the marriage was more about family honor and economics than it was about the woman's emotions. Hence why Japan has a lot of male escorts, women even pay to be with a man who they can cry around.
tl;dr: It's not that money comes first; parents are concerned with family honor and that their children are "taken care of," which usually means they expect you to have some money.
Well we're focused on Japan and when it comes to marriage, Japan is far from traditional in this day and age.

Japan's very traditional and it's only just started veering away from the typical gender roles where men are typically the breadwinners and women are the homemakers. More and more women are entering the work force due in small part from Abe Shinzos' womenomics push (even then the women are low paid and/or doing part time jobs ) and challenging these role. Many men still have a traditional view about their roles in society as do some women, while there is progress being made I could see that being cherry picked to fit certain agendas. I could only find one survey on the matter but it was through Line App- and it's generally used to text, call and *split the bill* so I figured that may be a tad biased?
For China, it seems many more women are more willing to pay, ofc there's still traditional views in play so it's a work in progress.
