It's a bit soon to be judging an entire relationship off of just one event.
We have no idea what events preceded the cheating. Already we've now seen that her mother has assaulted two unrelated women, maybe he was trying to escape something and the belt to the face alongside all the random violence only kept him in line out of fear. The only violence he demonstrated was in self defense, and that was quickly overpowered.
Purely by that narrative alone, that could easily have been so many other situations. Flip the genders around and then see how the story feels.
