The sheer amount of compliments he's saying over the guy seems unnatural for Trump.
It is very simple.
Elon's empires were crumbling because they are mostly failures at the bottom line.
So he invested in Trump to get himself back on track.
Because of his high investment, Trump keeps him around.
And because Trump probably reads people well and Elon is quite easy to read, he knows that Elon is a sensitive boy, so he makes sure he is well-fed with compliments to keep him around. Even then he drops a light-baddie/jab towards Elon every now and then.
I think Trump is stable, but he has a path where his power really gets to him, which I cant predict that it wont. If he doesn't try to run for a 3rd term, then he is ok. But if he does, there is a chance he is not. However, even if he does, there is a chance he is still ok. I doubt he will, but I cant say that with 100% certainty.
Elon is not stable and he never was. He is an autistic narcissist and his ego is as thick as a soap bubble.

Trump likes money and Elon is the richest humanity history. Trump probably gargles his balls
Their twitter war and other earlier drama gave them a rocky start, and the ball gargling in Trump's case tends to be over the perception of power via a perceived pecking order, he never really sees someone as an equal.
Usually we see it closer to how he wanted to be perceived in 'Battle of the Billionaires' on WWE; a combative relationship that demonstrates profit for both people. How he's acting with Elon is closer to how he was with Putin during Trump's first term, when he was straight up expressing his fear-based respect of him and China in interviews on 60 Minutes (the 'Strongmen' comments as well).
After seeing some right wing interviews basically showing them sucking eachother's dicks, and over watching how Elon's kid discussed their time in X-based companies so blatantly crazy that Fox had to edit the footage out... I am under the impression it's a shared secret of some kind as otherwise Trump prefers a sense of tug-of-war. He only bends over like this when he feels like he's lost, this isn't how he handles his typical delegation practices.

I'm so bored.....
I dont know what Trump's relationship is with Elon, but he's recently demoted him, as expected. Everyone saw the rift between them coming.
What Elon has is a deal with Trump. There's no way he didn't secure something beyond nice words with his 288 million. Trump is known for respecting his personal deals and he repays favors. With Elon, it's a fight over how much he hates Elon vs how much he feels the need to repay the 288 million. Trump doesn't steal. Elon bought him, and he's regretting the deal now but can do nothing about it.
The case with Putin is magnitudes more interesting. Putin owns Trump. He has compromising material on Trump and saved Trump from bankruptcy. Trump was recruited as a KGB agent under the code name Krasnov, and inserted as the US president in 2016. Ever since before then, he has done everything Putin told him to do.
In the case of Putin, Putin holds not only the Elon card with Trump feeling indebted, but he also actively blackmails him. It's interesting to watch how subservient Putin has him. I would like to see Trump's face of terror as he realizes he fucked up with Putin, and breaks down in tears. Alas, this will only happen behind closed doors and the public will only read about the scandal.
It seems we will get the inside scoop soon, given that both cia and fbi have already come forward. Now it's a matter of how fast this snowballs, which will depend on luck and how fast Putin can eliminate the connected FSB spies.
