If you really enjoy survival, you should try hiking. I once walked 24 kilometers to a neighboring village and back in a day with our dog and when I got home, I sat on the floor and couldn't get up for about 15 minutes. My legs were shaking a little from the strain.
There are a lot of scammers among mechanics. They take advantage of the fact that most people don't know the structure of their cars very well. If they see that a person doesn't understand it, they inflate the prices and foist off additional, meaningless services, as in your case.
your engine died because of a conspiracy of manufacturers. they put tricky sensors in the engine that do not start the engine if it is several years old. without these sensors it could serve and serve for many more years, but it is profitable for manufacturers that people buy and buy new engines. :)

to be honest i had made several key mistakes on that trip..
1, I thought the oil was low becasue I checked it when the engine was super hot... so I over filled it with oil
2. I accidently had 4 wheel drive on the entire 1500 miles up until it seized up
3. I had driven about 7 hours straight without letting the engine cool by that point, going through mountains too
4. The engine had 220k miles on it, so it was at the end of its life anyway
5. The gas mileage towing the trailer was about 5 miles per gallon... I think after getting the new engine, the miles per gallon doubled

ya thats why i think everyone should learn to fix their own car.... cuz mechanics are not worth what they charge

You should look into what it takes to rebuild an automatic transmission, it's not trivial.
