What is the cringe emotion?

Is it like sadness? Anger? What does it feel like and when did you experience it? Does everyone have it or only some people?

I think it's embarrassment mixed with shame. Something in a social situation is "off" in a way that demonstrates a lack of self-awareness for the person involved. Realizing the faux pas causes people to feel the "cringe"—either for themselves, or from empathy. "The Emperor's New Clothes" comes to mind.

I feel cringe very rarely if ever then?

Have you ever heard nails on a chalkboard?

Or a squeegee on a particularly squeaky piece of glass?

Or a high pitched sound that makes your hairs stand on end and your spine clench?

That's what Cringe feels like, and people tend to feel it either by proxy for another as a form of empathy when they act ignorantly awkward to such a degree that it's embarrassing... or when they notice themselves doing it.

Ingroup Cringe tends to be the most vivid expression of it, as the more relatable the figure the more you can relate to what they've done.

Oh, and here's an hour and a half talk from Contrapoints on how Cringe works:

I have never felt this way due to anything social I just realized.

Oh! Yes! I accidentally googled hentai on my school account thinking I had logged out and the embarrassment was enough to make me scream because I know people can see that shit
