Let's be honest, self defense is used a lot to defend aggression actions against victims of bullying and pariahs. Basically you have ideas of "preemptive self defense" and "fighting words," that society can use on a whim to justify aggression because it's really not even enough to for people to be peaceful and greedy because greed knows no bounds and turns into targeting, scapegoating, and ultimately violence. It just shows how even rather innocuous concepts can be twisted by the bully that is society particularly American society. This also explains racism epidemics and others forms of bigotry, because there's always someone that needs to pay the price and that is guiltier than everyone else.

If the other person commits no assault or trespass, it's not self-defense.
Assault is a very loose term.
How loosely could it apply?

Assault is the mere threat of violence. Assault is the threat. Battery is physical violence.
Legal definition doesn't equal literary definition.
No idea what you’re talking about. There is no definition for assault which is not assault
Fucking retard you are the one that mentioned legal definitions. Assault can mean battery.
Her nose is too deep into the dictionary to hear the flow of words properly.
