Spoken like a true Apath, most people see situations that trigger stuff they care about and mirror based on the similarities, rather than only doing it to be part of a larger ingroup. 

If they don't actually care it yields the room to sensationalize it as something apart from them, but many get drawn into it over having a strong general opinion over the subject matter. This is how you see Appeal to Emotion snag people, often twisting the story into something big enough for enlistment over knowing they won't fact check things they already agree with.
