As weird as it sounds I feel like I got a wee bit closer to god today and it sucks
OK I made it - I completed my pilgrimage!! I walked almost 1,000 KMs across northern Spain, (following the path beneath the Milky Way). I never explained where I was going. My destination was always Santiago de Compestella to the (supposed) tomb of the apostle St. James. I arrived in Santiago last week and then continued walking to the coast to Muxia and Finisterre. Pre-Christianity this was an ancient pagan route to what was believed to be the end of the world at the time. (The Catholic church hasn’t been able to fully claim this section of this ancient pilgrimage, which is partly why I wanted to keep going.)
this journey was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It altered my perspective on existence, humanity and life in general. I can’t expound on this yet though because I’m still processing the whole thing and my thoughts are many but not fully formed or grounded.
Every person I met on the way was extremely interesting, intelligent, open-minded and unique. They came from all over the world and moved like a disjointed tribe. Id meet someone, spend a day with them, move on and then run into them a week or so later in some random village. This happened with different people almost daily. It was weird walking into a place you’ve never been before and hearing people call your name. I travelled through a lot of medieval villages and slept in some funky situations that felt at times like the Bastille.
This walk filled my soul but it also kicked my ass on every possible level pretty much everyday. It was physically, spiritually and emotionally fulfilling but also devastating at times.
Physically I was plagued with serious blisters that made some days feel like every step I took was on razor blades. Most of my toes are numb and my feet still throb every night. I’m told this is normal.
Anyhow I’m back in Santiago for a beat and then onward. just wanted to give a wee update as I left this thread hanging like usual :)
I haven’t read the forum, watched the news or talked to many people for weeks. No clue what’s happening in the world. Hope all’s well!
if you come to germany ill take you to octoberfest
I’ll be in Bruges and Brussels next week xd
This is similar to my dreams of just traveling across the world and site seeing, I'd especially travel to Eurasia, witness the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan, etc. In another life, I imagine learning all sorts of languages, and cultures and just making friends on a grand journey.
If all ties to my life and goals die out then that will probably be my plan B.
I hope to see more of your updates on your grand adventure. Be safe!
Nice :D
Glad you're having fun, MissC. Maybe we'll meet at some point.
There's something very nice about traveling, and especially about meeting new people. It's refreshing. Long hikes are fantastic, they are painful when you go on them, but somehow it feels great, especially when you reach your destination.
I didn't take you for the adventuring type.
