Longer but more thorough:

"It is intolerable to us that an erroneous thought should exist anywhere in the world, however secret and powerless it may be." - George Orwell, 1984

"The permanent lie becomes the only safe form of existence... Every wag of the tongue can be overheard by someone, every facial expression observed by someone. Therefore every word, if it does not have to be a direct lie, is nontheless obliged not to contradict the general, common lie. There exists a collection of ready-made phrases, of labels, a selection of ready-made lies." - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago (sudden Spatial Mind flashbacks).

The developed, western democratic world isn't a dystopia by any stretch of the imagination.

Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to travel more. And I love how much feckless yuppies hate hearing that lol

The future will always seem dystopian to those who see it coming through the lens and framework of how things used to be.

Most dystopian works serve to warn people against the machinations of efficiency.

I think that fictional sci-fi extremes can somewhat distort our view of what a dystopian society might look like. China, Iran, Afghanistan and North Korea are dystopian societies. Nazi Germany was dystopian. Parts of Brazil are pretty dystopian.

You don’t need robot waiters and the Ministry of Love to be a dystopia.

Something as simple as transparency is dystopian to old enough authors, yet nowadays people seem to be becoming increasingly fine with it.

With such a model, it becomes easier to figure that the things people of now are afraid of will become the new normal for those of the times. It must be weird to be an old person surrounded by the fears of yesteryear normalized.

True, I got a taste of what that must feel like when I saw my friend’s kid the other week. She’s 3yo and can navigate an iPad/phone better than I can.

It honestly freaked me out how natural they are with technology, and how it seems to draw their attention more than real human interaction or the outside world. It’ll be really interesting seeing the tech-native generation come of age, I can’t help but hold a pessimistic view of how they’ll turn out.
