How is that possible, we're living through one now.

True, a lot of our surveillance tech fits 1984, and a lot of our groupthink stupidity fits the projections of Fahrenheit 451. A lot of what makes something dystopian isn't over what it's doing, but over how it'd stand to get worse.
We just get deeper down the rabbit hole. If malls ever come back in style with hotels installed inside we may end up with Megacities down the line.

We're just not wired to be fulfilled so it's always going to (d)evolve, the only variable that we can remove here is the fulfillment of basic needs which leaves an infinity of avenues that our future can take since we are now dependent on shit like what gives our life purpose if we're not hunting for food every day
