To buy an apartment like this one would cost anywhere from $350 000 to $1million depending on how fancy the apartment is. Then I would have to come up with a down payment of at least 25% ($87 500.) I would then have to prove to the bank that I can afford the mortgage, interest, insurance, utilities (my water and gas heat are free here, which is another reason I want to stay. I only pay about $90/ month for electricity.) Then there would be condo fees of anywhere from $600 to $1000/ month, depending on whether or not there are amenities like a pool, fitness room, concierge, etc. Parking is not always included in the cost of a condo purchase, either. I know one lady whose parking spot in the underground cost her more than her car would cost to buy brand new.
Just no way. Only wealthy people own condos over here.
I made $15/hour before I lost my job. EI pays about 2/3 of that and COVID benefits are $2000/month.
