Lots of controlling stuff...more than just what one would expect from parents who care about the well-being of their kid, more into the territory of trying to micromanage their kid's life. To put this in perspective, she was an adult by the time all of this was all going on.
I believe she wanted to work, but that would mean being out of their sight/being around other people who could influence her thinking and decision making, so that was not allowed. I don't think she was ever allowed to stay overnight at friend's home either. The father's in IT, and used that knowledge to control electronics use in the house. Not doing anything the way they wanted would lead to grounding, and I think either the father or mother was beating her too. The house was rigged with sensors on the windows and doors so that if she tried to leave, an alarm would go off. I think one time she escaped because living there was making her suicidal and wanted to kill herself, but she couldn't get far from the house because her parents chased her down. I believe she got in trouble over all of that.
The dynamics in the house were bad, with her brother basically having almost normal freedom & being allowed to do what he wanted, but Feathers being held to a different standard. She would often be accused of doing things she wasn't doing. Her brother would bully her, and her parents would always take his side. They didn't want her making any decisions on her own, and they were against her going to school, unless it was something they wanted her to go there for (which I think at the time was culinary arts). Basically she had no freedom, didn't see any hope of it, and lived in constant fear of whatever the next thing was that would either disappoint her parents or get her in trouble. So she was constantly depressed and suicidal. Not like the "I'm so depressed, I can't visit my friends on the weekend" teen girl thing, but actually making attempts to kill herself.
When everything came to a fore and she decided to escape and start doing things her own way, she basically had to escape the house and bolt out into the neighborhood and hide. The whole time she was wracked with nervousness and paranoia because she didn't know what would happen if her parents found her; she only knew that they would not allow her to make any decisions on her own. I'm probably leaving out a lot, but that's enough to get a gist of what the situation was like.
