and Jesus please give me the self-control to not cave and have irl sexual intercourse with a Christian man
Don't they not believe in sex before marriage, and that divorces in the eyes of God aren't real?
While the Old Testament was more about obeying the laws by changing behavior, the New Testament was also about intent and the spirit of those "laws". Jesus distilled the first two Commandments to the whole of the doctrine, and that lust in the heart and mind was as bad as doing the act, etc. Sex before marriage is generally frowned upon, sure. Many Christians go on to claim it is a sin. I'm sure we could dive deep into how the tradition of marriage and its secularization have strayed from any true or spiritual intent behind marriage. One can argue that marriage was also traditionally meant to unite tribes, women were used as property in these negotiations, etc., and was then layered over with spiritual implications later. Whatever way you want to look at it; chicken or the egg. Divorce was considered by Paul (or Peter?) a necessary thing because "your hearts are hardened". I believe divorce was reconciled more harshly before the New Testament times. I'm not sure where "in the eyes of God" divorces aren't real is to be found. But divorce is about as real as marriage is. Marriage was a necessity of some sort, then so too became divorce.
