You measure psychopathy by the persons apparent lack of empathy. That’s according to psychologists. Measuring sociopathy is totally different.
An example scenario. For instance to determine if somebody can be diagnosed with aspd(psychopathy or sociopathy but psychopathy in this case). Psychologists can hse family, friends neighbours or work collegues as informants to observe there empathetic responses to certain things. This observation in the persons level of empathy regarding certain situations and actions can be reported back to psychologists to give the psychologists a concrete profile of the person.
Thats why in general psychopaths are constantly playing a false role of some kind. To distract or throw off the scent that there might be something abnormal about them. Most psychopaths are ego syntonic, meaning they know about there abnormalities this could be pedophilia(which conflicts with society in a sociological and psychological perspective) Which they actively try to hide deceptively (narcissistic social preservation) and try to act on there behaviours which are considered by society at large to be shameful disgusting and heinous. This shameless active orientation on the attempt to engage in illegal activities through any means possible and feeling no remorse for there crimes would qualify for the diagnosis of AsPd.
Thus it can be said that psychopathy is infact narcisistic sociopathy.
Think of the diagnosis as not a concrete way of determining if the person is truly evil. But in developing a way of managing the person. The tendency to commit horrible crimes and feel no remorse for example. A way to actually manage these through therapy, prison or drugs. Obviously maybe not psychopathy directly. But there symptoms like depression which can be associated with there psychopathy can be treated with medicine.
In the psychological world there are both contracted informants(fully aware of there job to gather information on a client) or non contracted informants(Informants that are not given the role of gathering information of a person but instead are taken in to questioning by psychologists to gain information on the client this can be family friends or aquaintences)
The non contracted informants will be asked questions such as
“When the person has harmed somebody, do they usually express distress or are not bothered by it”
Obviously the answer to this question where they were distressed or not cannot fully answer to whether the client is pathological. So they use more informants and ask the informants more questions only to finally build a profile. Which they can use to assess, manage and manipulate the person for therapeutic and rehabilitation purposes.
Because god knows that you don’t want to be clinically evaluated as a psychopath or any other axis 1 or axis 2 disorders.
