Buy a surge protector

My entire iMac was just fried today by a one second long power surge. 3,000 down the drain.

Hoping it is under warranty with apple care and can be replaced or they can just replace the battery or something like that and then it works hopefully.

But I’m looking at unwanted costs even if it is repairable best case scenario... worst case I have to buy an entire new computer.

Today is your friendly reminder to buy a surge protector. Don’t be dumb.

Have you tried any of these things? https://thenextweb.com/lifehacks/2017/06/14/how-when-why-to-reset-the-pram-smc-on-your-mac/

I've thought I had a blown motherboard before, and all I needed to do was a CMOS reset.

If you'd gone PC instead, you could have just swapped out whatever part fried.

Power supply (PSU) got fried. Everything else will be fine, or at least a PC would be in that situation of yours.

And it's an iMac, so unlike a laptop the power supply is inside the frame.

The replacement part isn't expensive, but it's Apple so if they fix it for cheap I'd be shocked.

With Mac it's by design set up to require a specialist take care of it for you, both for the classic warranty void that follows opening the computer yourself and with their parts being less easy to work with.

It's by design meant to be just user friendly enough to make bank on people who can't be assed to learn how to fix it themselves, much like what we're seeing the modern car becoming. It's how they can justify achieving the benefits of a monopoly without technically being one, much like their branding on different ports to render their usage more exclusive.

I'd argue that people are better off with a Mac emulator than a Mac.

Watched a tutorial on this. The repair man happens to be a transexual, so you should understand a little.

On a side note, this guy is showing off his soldering skills, it could be cheaper to buy a new psu unit for your model as opposed to having new capacitors installed labor charges right. By the end of the video you can see how easy the PSU is installed.

If you study a disassembly video, you may find any monkey with a screwdriver can fix it.
