I had some time to consider what you said, Turncoat, and I think you may be right. I'd intuitively say that the long-term effects of firing toxic people will be good, because you can start building a company culture. However, I agree with you that the risks may be too great if they see it as unjust, and firing those people to have a clean start might be difficult -- it may even take a while to get a new customer space.

So I likely should've said that I would fire junkies at McDonalds, but only if I could get away with it and was convinced that it wouldn't bring down morale. So perhaps I was wrong here. I would still not work with junkies, but perhaps firing them can be counter-productive in certain scenarios.

User333 show me statistics of junkies @ US McDonalds. I'm pretty certain you're trolling but I legit laughed at the "fancy McDonald's in Denmark." I'm not from Denmark, don't live anywhere near Denmark, and they're far from fancy.

Chapo, start answering my questions instead of avoiding them or fuck off:

Chapo, why do you keep repeating that I couldn't do your boss' job, when I've said multiple times that that I probably couldn't?
Also, why is it good if a supervisor is a bottleneck in the workplace?

To reply to your assertions, I do not believe I am dreaded because I whip people to work. I've had a few people transfer to my group because I am critical of people's work. A supervisor's not supposed to be your friend.

Why do you call my workplace a shithole, when you don't even know where I work? I'm pretty sure I work at a significantly better place than you do.

Did she really swear at me for a reason? How do you know that? I mean, unless you meant shit reasons, I've no fucking clue how you could possibly infer that.

Let me give you a bit more context. I drove this student's rights to give a presentation at that conference. I didn't need to do that, and I'm the only person here who goes to the degree I do to help my students, because I want them to have a good career. Now, her presentation was cancelled because they flooded the agenda, which is completely beyond my control. She was swearing at me and blaming me for scheduling a presentation for her that got cancelled, despite the fact that I explained that it was out of my control; her response to that was that "I should have known it would be cancelled." I had said earlier (via e-mail) that I can move the talk to the next conference two weeks later (also work on my part) in case she wanted to give that talk there, which she childishly refused to show me how angry she is. Lol. Stop being a simp. She deserved getting her next presentations cancelled and getting shit tasks for 3 weeks. Now her behavior is already much better.

You're making all sorts of value judgements without understanding a thing. You have no idea where I work, what I do, or who I work with, but you're like uber-confident that you're right, whilst being utterly clueless in reality.

Maybe it wasn’t technically your fault it got cancelled but if you don’t know the place well enough to know when that might happen. That is on you.

Your condition for not being a shitty supervisor is to be a literal fortune teller. And if you're not, it's completely justified for people to cuss at you.

I'm not sure if you're trolling or if drugs fucked up your head.

What the fuck could have happened that was so fucking unusual to cause her presentation to be cancelled.

Legga legga legga, I will provide said evidence just as soon as you provide evidence of the oposite.

'Company Culture' has a short shelf life in high turnover jobs, where people can leave as readily as "I'd rather work for tips", "I can't be in McDonalds for my entire life", "I'm thinking of going to school", "It's getting in the way of my life", "These hours are awful" etc etc. High turnover jobs mean they can just go somewhere else, while you're stuck with whatever that means.

If you only keep the humorless dullards around in the service industry, you'll see the customer base reflect it too. "Service with a smile" tends to be easier on those with more open minds, and in the service industry you want to be able to be warm and inviting, rather than cold and robotic.

As some drugs become increasingly legal (like marijuana), you're essentially alienating your customer base as well by having every employee be straight laced. From experience, it seems like the ones who've spent some time partying make for better conversationalists.

So I likely should've said that I would fire junkies at McDonalds, but only if I could get away with it and was convinced that it wouldn't bring down morale.
How do you plan to keep tabs on the team's morale, especially if every functional 'junkie' on the job knows you're gunning for them after your first one or two times?

There's also websites like Glassdoor where your reputation can begin to both follow and precede you. When you need a rehire, the reputation of your specific franchise installment can make or break how likely you are to fill the space.

So perhaps I was wrong here. I would still not work with junkies, but perhaps firing them can be counter-productive in certain scenarios.

If they prove they can do the work and aren't using on the premises, what's the issue?

Back when I worked at TGI Fridays, one of my co-workers would always smoke with his friends at like 8pm during his break, but the guy was basically unfirable from being such a hard worker otherwise (he'd smoke to chill out and work harder, as he's otherwise a bit of a hyperactive spazboi). In that sense it's not really too different from taking a medication to up your work productivity as long as it doesn't get in the way of the work itself.

If you had to pick between a lazy good for nothing sober dude who ignores his responsibilities with his head in the clouds versus a high productivity ganja user, which do you really see as a worse hire?

If it makes you feel any better I don’t know that I’d be that much better of a supervisor than you. I just know I wouldn’t have scheduled that girls presentation like that.

Checkmate. I concede.

The lazy person who does nothing.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm quite impressed by your boss that he hasn't fired your junkie ass yet. You would never be hired for my position, dream on.
