Stewart was a lot more down to Earth than these guys, though. He was blatantly liberal, but at least he could take shots on his own side.

Are you implying that a liberal can't normally be down to earth?

My favorite material from John's his appearances on Fox News:

He didn't just throw down on his own show, he went to theirs as well to fight on their home front with a sense of honor and wit. He also went hard even on liberal networks:

Oh no, I think liberals can throw down or be down to earth. Jon and Destiny come to mind immediately. Both willing to go the oppositional turf in their respective spheres and humiliate the other side. Jon was so clear in conveying what he seen that he actually single-handedly nuked Crossfire. The O'Reilly appearances were my favorite.

Speaking to Instrument, Jon was openly liberal to my knowledge. Like I said on his way out, he said that the left should play more like the right does on Fox. As in more unapologetic, and to the point without sugar coating things. But there doesn't really seem to be anything equivalent to him nowadays. Maybe Bill Maher.

I really don't see the issue with John Oliver.

even oliver, while not douchy like fallon, is still terribly unfunny and generic

His material's solid and more thorough though, and the outrage is both humorous and relatable.

He's also not selling out to Boomers.

I like Oliver too. The first two seasons were pretty good

I used to like his show as a teen, and I'm embarrassed at myself. "I think we were all there when the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Prior to that, it was a legume." You got the whole nursing home cracking up with that one, Stephen. The man's bread and butter is snarky quips and pandering to the sensibilities of liberals. You'll never find him having a spine and criticizing his own side, unless it's politically conventional. Fuck this faggot.

Yeah agreed. I feel like comedians (particularly overtly liberal comedians) are walking on eggshells at the moment, which makes for pretty ineffectual satire. I know a lot of folks blame "cancel culture" for that, but I think it's got more to do with the way a show/public figure frames themselves.

If you market yourself as the paragon of liberal virtue (through sad and serious speeches after some kind of public tragedy like George Floyd etc - like Colbert has started to do), you'll get slammed for deviating from the script. But if you don't pretend you're anything other than a low-brow comedy, no one bats an eye when you do blackface (which I think is behind the Always Sunny in Philadelphia immunity to "cancel culture")

Poor Contra.

The best way to protect yourself is to be deprecating in every direction, typically with disproportionate retribution towards yourself compared to those outside of the circle. Always Sunny never deviates from this, at most showing their side cast decay as they become more like them.

It also helps that it has Danny Devito on board to legitimize it.

It’s because it’s a good show. Even the people who would usually be outraged about blackface watch it. If they cancel it, what will they watch while they get high so they can think of the next stupid thing to pretend to care about.

Agreed, plus I think it helps that their blackface/racism is really lampooning the main characters more than anyone else. I've kinda theorized that this is why they're completely untouchable.

I think The Simpsons is an interesting comparison because they got away with a lot for years because they punched in all directions, but ultimately it was impossible to argue that Apu was mocking the white people. Whereas every racist joke in Always Sunny ultimately mocks the gang.
