I've done both and like them for very very different reasons.
Microdosing uses a super small amount of supply and works like a surprisingly rejuvinating cup of coffee, where rather than getting trippy and messed up I can actually function better than I do sober. I just had so much focus and zest for things, I highly recommend it.
I personally am in the conservative camp with any revelations that come from drug use, so much so that I would dismiss them as completely dellusional.
I'm not, they give you a chance to see things from outside of yourself, within a different toolkit. Once put back into your more normal, native self, it becomes easier to self-compare the two states. I've seen it take people out of the "Everyone is just like me" zone by offering a second set of eyes, leading to increases in developmental empathy overtime from both that and the moments they've been under increased sensitivity.
For me anyway, it's also awakened some movies in ways that my brain and body were too resistant to truly experiencing. It got rid of the numbness and let me truly experience films like Requiem for a Dream or Brave Little Toaster for what it was truly meant to convey.
Then again I'm also presenting this from a different basis: LSD to me feels like a more controlled schizophrenic episode. Still, from observation it seems like people if they are in a nice, controlled environment without any blatant triggers in it, can walk away from it more woke than when they started.
When you are taking substances that fuck with your train of thought, the very logic that said train of thought is based on loses it's certainty, therefore, through suspension of logic and critical thinking, drugs can make you come to false epiphanies, that on a sober look, are pure nonsense.
It's what you take away from what you puritanically call 'nonsense' that has real, intrinsic value. Life is nonsense, what we witness is pure impressionism, but what we take away from it alongside our room to compare it to our peers insights is where the logic comes from.
Logic is attempting to find patterns within the seeming chaos, and such substances just make things a bit more chaotic.
