I threw out lots of examples with various strengths of community and ethnic ties bc I don't recall how much hate the Gauls had for the Romans prior to the Renaissance. The Romans were everywhere at the time we're talking about (the time they were actually called Romans, as opposed to the time that the RC church called most of Europe "The Holy Roman Empire") and the exact details of who was sort of ok with Roman occupation and who was not are a bit fuzzy in my mind. So yeah, my comparisons are not perfectly precise. Neither is contemporary cross cultural study. Forget about drawing examples from cultures separated by centuries :P
