Thoughts on corona vaccines?

What are your thoughts on the COVID vaccines they have announced?

I'm not usually a subscriber to conspiracy theories, but I find it very difficult to believe that it took 10+ years of trying and failing to create a SARS vaccine, and yet a COVID one rolls around in less than 10 months and they call it kismet or something? How is that possible?

I also find it kind of suspect that they keep claiming 90%+ efficacy rates, without actually saying what it's effective at doing. Seemingly not preventing infection, only lessening the chance of a severe case (same as the flu vax, I'm told, which is still a seasonal feature with a decent mortality rate among the vulnerable).

It all seems very over-hyped and almost pointless to circulate a really mediocre vaccine, and I'm sure the companies pushing them are gonna make serious dinero.

That said, I won't object to having it, particularly because I'm sure vaccine passports will be a thing very soon.

Doesn't it make sense that a rise in priority would affect the amount of focus that goes into the project?

Moderna's cheif of medicine admit that their vaccine doesnt actually stop people from getting infected and spreading the virus to others, it just "stops people from getting severely sick" in his own words. This vaccine will not contribute to herd immunity. Only the person who receives the vaccine will be protected.

This may end up doing more harm than good. People who previously were responsibly social distancing may start going out more often after receiving the vaccine, and actually cause a larger spread of the virus than when they did have to worry about getting sick.

I see this vaccine as something that could only be beneficial to the most at-risk members of our society.

I am unsure yet if the other vaccines behave similarly

This vaccine is sketchy. Vaccines often take 10+ years of trial and error- sometimes needing to be edited years down the line. These vaccines were made super quickly, and with an new experimental type of vaccine) Tbh I am planning to hold off for a month or 2 before getting a vaccine.* I'd rather wait and see if unexpected side effects show up when the number of recipients is in the 10s of thousands instead of just a pool of 90-200 people.

*Actually if all the different vaccines only stop you from getting sick and dont stop you from spreading it, I won't get any of them. If I don't get symptoms I could unknowingly spread the disease to others, I would rather know if I am a risk to Alice.

There are specific parts of this virus good for vaccine. There are other significant parts of this virus not good for vaccine. Unfortunately, the current vaccine offering lean towards the bad side. I'm waiting for better science. This was thrown together too fast imho.

The virus came from my ASS!

I hadn't considered the risk of people not social distancing after the vaccine, that's actually a really good point. Makes the idea of a rushed, suboptimal vaccine more sinister than just absurd.

That would also complicate the concept of vaccine passports, because having a plane full of vaccinated folk who will still spread the virus to each other does exactly jack shit to curb the pandemic.

I hear this argument a lot, and I can't deny that it makes some sense. I expect that people in the know have a better insight, but I still struggle to understand how priority and money changes the science. It's not like the people who have been trying to develop a SARS vaccine have ever said anything like "We just need $X hundred million dollars and we can make it work" (or if they have, I'm obviously not savvy to those conversations lol).

HIV/AIDS was a huge priority for a while, with very little to show for it. Same for various cancers. Obviously money and attention helps (probably why breast cancer is one of the most survivable - they have great PR), but 10 months for a COVID-19 vaccine seems like some deus ex machina shit when most other coronaviruses seem almost impossible to vaccinate against. Plus you'd think this new technology would be in some way transferable, and yet there's still no discussion of a SARS or MERS vaccine, despite it being totally possible that they could cause the next major pandemic at any unfortunate point in time.

 Yes.

There are 6(?) strains of Corona, including a new one that mutated in Denmark's mink farms. They had to cull the entire in captivity mink population bc of the new strain. Last I heard, the entire country was going back on lockdown.

So yeah, the vaccine they're peddling is bullshit.

And what user said ^^ above.

I've already had it and I didn't die.

Vaccines are stupid and annoying, unless they're for something deadly and painful like polio and the others vaccines I had as a child. Forcing people to get vaccinated for every flu bug and skin rash is just obnoxious.

People should be allowed to take a few sick days every year, and develop their natural immunities to minor illnesses if they want.

The corporations just want everybody working 355+ days every year.
