I've lost many.

I `lose` on a daily basis because I work with people who are smarter than me and need to engage in topics where I don't have enough domain knowledge. I have a relatively small ego, so I can tolerate it. If I'm wrong, I want to know I'm wrong. I would never spend months and months defending a losing argument.

Why ask questions if you don't expect answers? 

If they didn't have at least one witness, they could both just declare themselves the winner without any means of verification, and without enough witnesses they could claim individual bias to make themselves feel better. 

I always expect answers because when all else fails I know you will come to the rescue.
