I don't think it's that weird personally, and more and more people are finding themselves either going that way or idealizing it. Many share the sentiment of resenting their fellow man, usually only desiring to interact with them to fulfill their own needs. With the internet, suddenly a lot of what was needed has been streamlined through separating it from the socializing it once required (like Tinder dating). 

It's seriously becoming more and more common. Incels, MGTOW, Hikikomori, Internet Shamanism, Monks, you name it and there's a ton of soloists within it. He still uses the internet, so he still gets social interaction (of a form), and who knows, he might buy some high end interactive sex toy and be set for life.

What makes you think social proxying to get around socializing is abnormal by today's standards? It's not like FOTS is retreating into a cave or some shit, he's just living alone with a computer. If this was before the age of the internet, that'd be fucking weird, but these days it's become easier and easier to accomplish what socializing once did as a total shut in. While I'll never quite relate to it, tons of people live alone and prefer it that way, some even going as far as to move to another country to feel that much more separated. 

Even just burying your head into a cellphone (especially with headphones) is a step away from the social sphere as we once knew it. I'd argue that FOTS is just a slightly ahead of the curve normie. 

I also doubt that he's gone to the extent of true social isolation. He likely still has a job/education routine, has to go out to buy himself food, and otherwise tolerate people being around him as a part of living life. As long as he has people in some form, he's not truly alone.
