Replace unintelligent with unremarkable, follows fads blindly with being a dabbler or "casual", acts without thought with goes through the motions, and otherwise keep naive but in more of a sense of not challenging their sense of life experience. 

There is no "normal" beyond the belief in it, but someone can definitely not stand out and otherwise have less depth within their lives. I'd say "Normie" to mean "Bland", and a lot of how they can appear to be "following fads blindly" is more over them going for an "easy listening" approach to life. 

Someone can be a normie without being overtly conformist. A lot of them fall into the patterns unwittingly, on accident, through a lack of cult content or sense of self-identity founded through a lack of personal push. It's essentially of the opposite of "driven" or "unique".

For real though, have you just been ignoring what people are becoming as technology and social politics continue to advance? People are becoming increasingly introverted as time goes on from what's around us catering to it more and more.
