I don't know if I'd call him a sociopath so much as a raging alcoholic/substance abuser with excessive personal baggage, oppressive boredom from life actually being that boring by comparison to his own adventures, and very justifiable levels of narcissism. Basically, how ASPD he appears I'd argue is all contextually based as opposed to chronic. They've also shown that he is capable of empathizing and sympathizing with those who get close to him (such as Morty and Bird Person), but with dimensional travel I'd imagine that people'd start to seem less and less real, similarly to that of the show Stein's Gate. The guy travels the multiverse, and you can see what sort of Nihilism creeps into a person's head after enough of that by watching Morty.
He's closer to a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. I mean come on, he tears up when seeing his memories of Morty before covering it with a snarky facade-driven excuse, and is willing to sacrifice himself to save Morty when push comes to shove.
