Haart.

I withdrew from medical school into the first year. This is going to be a pretty frank note so I hope you all would tread lightly.

It's a family affair. My cousin is an orthopedic surgeon and we would talk shop about gross anatomy. Over thanksgiving he gave me some books, too, as a nice gesture. I've always looked up to that guy.

More to the point, I pretty much regret my decision every day. Career outlook is still uncertain. I wanted to be a doctor for a long time and everything I did was toward that goal. Medical school is damned hard, but I carry regret. Medicine is a calling. It's interesting even. It garners you respect.

So, I wonder Haart, if you would share perhaps some of the more abysmal parts of doctoring. Would you share something that would point me towards peace with my decision. I suppose anyone else who has any real inkling about medicine, chime in. pax .

Happy to oblige :P

I get up at 5AM most days. Work doesn't stop until 9PM. Much later if it's going to the coroner.

I've been vomited on, spat on, bled on and punched more times than I could count.

Medicine is incredibly hierarchical. I'm still at the bottom and I've been studying for seven years. Minimum of four more unless I go into general practice (where the money isn't great). Getting yelled at by a consultant is part of the deal. Getting blamed for the consultant's mistake is also part of the deal.

The pressure is eyeball-melting. I often lie awake at night and wonder if I missed something. I've gone back to the hospital at 3AM more than once just to double-check, because the anxiety can be crippling.

Telling people that they're going to die takes an insane toll.

The list goes on. It's not a glamorous job.

No, sorry. This thread is why not medicine. I'm sure Haart would be happy to take your question but somewhere else.

@haart in the meantime thanks for the reply. A yeoman's service.

Haart, I'm thinking of going back.

Can you "pm" me? Let me know also when I might catch you around. I'd like to ask you something...

If you're looking for a consulting on a troll site, then I'm not surprised you've made the bad decision of withdrawing from med school.
