stoner question,
Is there a specific temp that weed burns? If so, if your fire is that exact temp, would your bud burn slower? Would you get more smoke out of it in the long run?
The temperature you're after likely varies from plant to plant. Unlike chemically produced substances, botanical ones tend to show more variety, and in marijuana's case that changes based on how dry or sticky it is.
If you're aiming for more smoke, blocking the path of oxygen towards the bud should put out the flame. I've seen some people use the cardboard from a matchbook to accomplish that, but I'd imagine the level of success there varying from pipe to pipe.
There are actually different cannabinoids that burn at different temperatures. One of the nice things about vaporizers is that they can achieve those temperatures and release the THC a lighter could not. If you're just rolling with a BIC and you burn X amount of marijuana, like TC said, you'd want to quickly block the bowl head to reduce loss. Burning it slower would not do you much good, as again, certain cannabinoids burn at higher temperatures. But at least you save what you released. This all may seem counter-intuitive, because after you finish smoking, you're left with a bunch of carbon you knock out. But within that ash are cannabinoids you were not able to release.
