22-year-old Tommy Gibbs lays strapped to a hospital gurney at the Johnson-Hemingway Neurological Research institute. Trapped within a catatonic state, he stares vacantly towards the ceiling. His mother, Harriet Gibbs, sits nearby, sobbing quietly into her hands. Her voice shakes as she begins to speak, recalling a time not long ago when her son still had his entire life ahead of him. Before he was cruelly robbed of such a promising future.
“People think marijuana is this harmless substance, and perhaps it is, in its unadulterated form. All I know is that dabs are a completely different monster. My son had finished school and was just about to start his internship when he was introduced to dabs. Pretty soon that’s all he cared about. He spent all his time “seshingâ€, which basically means getting together with a bunch of other addicts to consume large quantities of these concentrates in a sort of opium den setting.†Mrs. Gibbs continued, fighting through the tears, “They call the product by many names, bho, wax, shatter, budder, oil. All I know is that my son was hooked. Things went downhill quickly for him, and he spent most days just fumbling around in a muddled state. Soon after that I got the call every mother dreads.â€
On the other end of the line was Tommy’s best friend, Leo Robinson, calling from the emergency room at St Jude Hospital in Greensville Pass. Tommy and a group of friends had spent the greater part of the evening “seshingâ€. One of these men brought a large amount of some particularly potent concentrate with them, and decided they should see who could take the largest hit. “Tommy seemed really into it. He wanted to winâ€, his friend Leo remembers from the night which forever changed their lives. “We had done this a bunch of times before so I didn’t think it was a big deal. I wish I could go back in time. If I could do it all over again I would never have used dabs. Never.â€
