"Complex PTSD" (C-PTSD), due to the severity and long-term nature of the trauma, can cause attachment problems that very much resemble BPD. However, C-PTSD is always the result of trauma at the hands of a care-giver while in cases of BPD there may have been no identifiable matrreatment. Multiple areas of the limbic system are affect in C-PTSD. Similar brain regions and problems with the HPA axis to what has found in PTSD has been found to be affected in BPD as well though not entirely the same. BPD also appears to have a strong genetic component as well and the two disorders can be diagnosed co-morbidly.
