I actually have vertigo. Standing on the precipice of very high places actually feaks me out, unless I am equipped to jump off (i.e, the height is not lethal, I'm standing over water, I have a parachute on.) But I'll force myself to do it sometimes, to prove to myself that I won't be defeated by a fear, and because it is a weakness. I have a reflexive need to prod at my weaknesses like one might a sore tooth.

My feet actually "hurt"... They're overcome by a strange, tingly sensation. It is a somewhat unpleasant but very interesting sensory experience.

As for my mom, in some ways, she was very wise indeed.
