Creating additive value in a globalized hyper-connected world.

This might be irrelevant, but...  What of the coming "internet of things"?  Objects will literally be part of this network, moreso than before, not just the traditionally-thought-of devices.  Then we have wearable tech and other infiltrators of every-day-life that will become less visible, while also becoming more integrated.  There is unheard of information on any single human being, with the right know-how.  Those born into this milieu will not know a life without it.

So yeah...  The biggest jobs will not be creating information but managing it.  It really will be "data mining".

The main problem is that its easier to hack a computer, while physical objects are harder to physically steal.

Especially on a national level. But perhaps a closed local system could work.

my favorite computer hacking tool is a sledge hammer. it always works

additive value globally? more bandwidth and the proliferation of Linux

it would be interesting to see where the bandwidth bottlenecks are on the globe

That is one of the obstacles in achieving a higher degree of digital integration, however for organizations something very interesting happens with regard to security. Organisations reach a reasonable level of digital security at a much lower relative scale and cost then traditionally associated with crime. Think in terms of having someone on the outside building and managing a security system for you, depending on your needs that system varies in complexity and often times the real problem mangers have is not "how do I keep my system 100% secure"  rather "what is a good price and what is the right level of security for our business". The mechanics behind the security of digital data flows scaling faster and cheaper are the same mechanisms that are driving the workflows to replace and disrupt traditional non digital ones.

Right, so the IOT is central to this concept of additive value, take your fridge for example - when shopping being connected and knowing what you lack or what you have creates additive value by bringing data to a existing product and helping both advertisers and consumers optimise their products. Data itself in invaluable when creating A.I. and smart classifiers, a interesting example is FB. They realised their algorithm/classier for their face-detection software to the public. Now the reason this was not a risk in terms of competitors in the face detection space using the same algorithm to free-ride was because of the amount of data needed to train the classifier, facebook is unmatched in the face data space so it is unmatched in the face-detection space.

As more and more devices create data we see how the companies with access to these data flows with the ability to process them have a gigantic competitive edge when developing both big data analytics software but also when developing A.I.

I'll keep this as concise as possible.

Soaring flows of data and information are going to be the defining factor of globalization in the coming generation. Although trade and other conventional metrics of globalization have stagnated since 2008 the amount of additive value available through a small amount of well placed input is larger than ever. This is driven by three main factors: Tech companies operating at scale, platforms that lower the barrier to entry and outreach capacity.

This means that the additive value of work which takes advantage of these factors is immense.

I'll write more on this later if there is interest, any imput on this topic is welcome.

Yes, this is true.

Another interesting point within the trend towards digital is the ease of copying/imitating (without infringing upon IP laws) and what that means for consumers. It is that mechanism that drives the fact that today it is a lot harder to create barriers to entry within a industry and by extension the time a business can operate with an abnormal profit is extremely limited.

This is of course just a general rule and barriers can still be created within branding but no longer do you operate with the same exclusivity to your customer base.
