I agree. In Canada I don't carry around a gun and assume most do not have a gun. I can leave my doors unlocked and I have never been robbed. I can drop twenty dollars without noticing and someone will pick it up for me. I do the same. It is about having each other's backs rather than being at each other's throats. I think it is safer. I know american has a different society.
