Awhile back I wrote an article, “Religion and Mental Illness: How we define “hyper†religious and what does that mean.†It explores the link between hyper religion and mental illness. (See article below.)
Recently I thought about the stories in the bible. The bible was written over a span of 1500 years, by 40 writers. It has been said that unlike other religious writings, the Bible reads as a factual news account of real events, places, people, and dialogue. I personally don’t think this is true, and possibly some of those writers also suffered from mental illness. Or maybe Jesus was psychotic.
Now, let’s take a look at some of the stories that manifest symptoms of Mental Illness:
Jesus walked on water and could turn water into wine: Visual hallucinations?
Jesus heard the voice of God: Was he hearing voices and/or responding to audio internal stimulation?
Mary gave birth to Jesus without having sex with a human being: Were the writers delusional?
Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights in the desert fasting and praying: Was Jesus suffering from social isolation and withdrawal?
Jesus died on the cross for our sins: Was that act a form of suicide?
If the writings in the bible are true, perhaps Jesus suffered from a mental illness. If not, it might not be so farfetched to think that those that wrote the bible shared mental health diseases.
Now, going back to my original article, I have grappled with the link between hyper religion and mental illness. I expect some people to be offended by this article but, it’s worth your comments and hopefully, a pleasant open minded discussion.
