I quit tobacco, weed, synthetic weed many times and tried coke, legal coke, and smokable heroin (called dava) and none of these shits gave me withdrawals as horrible as coca-cola, what the fuck do they put in this shit? I tried to pass on it for one day and I felt like I was in hell, constant cravings and depression and psychological pain, pls halp
fuck knows what they put in it, i used to drink 2L daily and got headaches when i didn't
drink coke zero for a bit, then slowly move onto shop branded zero sugar cola and keep getting cheaper and cheaper brands gradually until its so revolting you'd rather just drink water, worked for me
I did a research paper on caffeine for my psychology of addiction class a few years back from watching what it did to multiple people I knew. I didn't drink much of the stuff to begin with, but that sealed the nail in the coffin when it came to dropping the stuff for good.
The shit's a diaretic masking itself as a source of hydration, and the sugar and salt content has it make itself appear more tempting than water. It snags you from being habit forming with it tricking you into wanting more by the virtue of you losing around 1.5 times the liquid you're taking in, ensuring that you'll remain thirsty enough to keep wanting more. The boost of energy feels rewarding, plus it can temporarily boost your immune system (it even can be used in lieu of an inhaler if you're missing one from having a similar structure chemically to the stimulant they use to promote breathing). From said boost, you can actually feel sick without it, especially if you adapt to it being a regular thing to the point of it's consumption being required to reach homeostasis. A friend of mine who was a pretty hard addict ended up expressing cold-like symptoms for months after he tried to go cold turkey.
Interestingly, caffinated drinks around South East Asia tend to have less to no actual caffeine in them. It seems to be a large part of the US agenda to make sugar/sodium/caffeine addicts out of it's people in the name of economic growth at the expense of our health. There's even higher counts of sugar and sodium in our breads, showing how US weight gains and poor health/hydration are no mystery at all. Fast food chains show the patterns to amped up degrees.
I'd personally say move onto natural fruit juices, but try to stairstep down as opposed to quitting it's use all at once. Recognizing that it's not actually quenching your thirst beyond the short term helps for getting past it's initial allure, as some of the headaches comes from the dehydration itself. Sodium when overdone also contributes to the problem, so reducing that intake (as difficult as that can be) helps with recovery as well.
