I picked them up off the floor and put them in the laundry. 

The smell wafted up   from approximtely 18" away  from my nose, where the dirty underwear were in my hand, as I walked from my son's room to the laundry hamper in the bathroom.

That was a distance of approximtely 12 ft, with  light breeze to carry the scent upward as I walked.

It's not like I actively tried to smell them.

I even turned my head and held my outstretched hand farther away from my body when the scent flew back.
