What is evil?

I'd say 'true' evil is when you hurt others on purpose and for the sake of hurting.

What is evil?

The word evil is used a lot but what does it really mean? Is evil going out of you way to hurt someone or is evil doing what ever you want without thinking about consequences?

Evil is an adjective humans created to use against other humans, which is very evil.

So a natural disaster could be considered evil? Famine? The death of a star?

True evil is when you hurt someone without getting anything in return and not getting someone or something else on this planet feel better because of your act.

A robot programmed to hurt would be the closest thing to true evil, but in practicality, no matter who gets hurt, someone out there, will like that. But the robot wont, he is a robot.

Perhaps true evil can exist only on a small scale and it needs to remain on small scale forever.

Say someone makes a robot programmed to farm, but it malfunctions and starts killing people, but it only kills him and his family, who live in absolute isolation, and the corpses and the robot are never found, for whatever reason. In this case, the robot doesn't get anything out of it, he has no sentience. The maker likes his family and the family likes each other and none of them are suicidal. And no one ever finds out about them, and no one ever knew them, so no one ever will feel anything towards their existence or death. That way no one can enjoy their misery. Because if someone enjoyed it, it would be good for them, so it can't be true pure evil. Pure evil gives nothing in return.

However, it is possible that one day someone settles on their land and if they were not dead, the new settlers would be unable to settle there. Which means that indirectly it caused good. Which means pure(true) evil is impossible in practicality.

It has to make someone feel bad to be evil and it has to make no one feel good, while making someone feel bad, to be pure evil.

Or so i see pure evil as. So you can get close to pure evil, but its practically impossible, when there are so many consciousness around.

So reality is not inherently evil, as it has the inherent capacity to do good or bad. Its neutral

Doing things without thinking about the consequences just feels like recklessness or impulsiveness and more selfish than evil. That doesn't mean that person wouldn't feel remorse later on.

Going out of your way to hurt someone isn't always evil? Some people do it simply because they're bored and not because they have an evil agenda.

Not everyone is going to agree on what is evil.

I think if you're aware that your fetus has a mental disability that would cause them to not be able to live a normal life and always have to be dependent on others in order to survive, you should probably abort it.

Others disagree. And I think that's evil. Or at least very very mean.

Edit: developmental disabilities rather than just mental.

Yes, except, if a natural disaster kills off a bunch of non muslims, ISIS will cheer.
And if it kills muslims, racists will cheer.

So it still creates good, in a twisted manner.

That'd sort of make reality inherently evil though. Evil until it makes someone (a consciousness) glad.
