I thought this interesting topic deserved some attention from me.
Pre Bismark Germany had only in short spurts been unified under what can today nation with a definitive identity. Although the definitive unification under Bismark yielded a somewhat strong national identity which was spurred on during the 1870s up until ww2 this was tainted following the two world wars. Add to that the repression of it in Eastern Germany and you have a situation (east west) post-unification of a country bound by a shared tainted history.
After unifying once again Germany could not assume a strong identity. Coming to terms with it's bloody history and role in WW2 lead to a adversity to one and a adversity to assuming leadership in the EU. Any form of "Strong Germany" macho type of nationalism was met with content within it's borders and actively discouraged within German by it's government and people.
The rise of EU lead to the supra-national identification the left has always been yearning for while the right has relied on a sub-national identification (see Bavaria for example).
