I think you need to learn more about how the human brain prossesess visual data. We are extremely good at detecting relative differences while bad at detecting absolute differences. For example if you turn on a second light in a already lit room it won't become twice as light. This is in part due to the data processing aspect I mentioned before but another contributing force is the fact that once the rod cells are saturated it becomes very hard to determine any difference is luminosity.
