A Taste of Repair (A Novel)

Judy listened for sounds. She thought she could hear someone snoring. That was probably one of the neighbors, a heavy built man. The other one was a frail looking woman she assumed was his wife. Despite her looks, she was often outside gardening with such energy that could make one wonder. Judy thought it was a way for her to deal with her slightly dense husband. It sure must cause her frustration.

The door was ajar so Judy dared to push it open a little more. There they were, in the same bed, the man snoring loudly as the skeletal woman slept silently on his arm. She closed the door. Next door was the girl's room. The door was shut and Judy tried to open it as quietly as she could. It made a slight clicking sound. She waited. Nothing happened.

She kneeled and opened her bag and took out a syringe. Then she slowly pushed the door open. She looked around. In the faint light she could see the wallpaper, was it really that faded or was it the light?... yellow with possibly colorful shapes on it, an empty toddler's bed, a row of stuffed toys on a shelf and bucket of toys suiting a small child. From have been excited and a tad nervous, Judy was now just surprised. This couple never had  had a child to her knowledge. And they were way too old to have a toddler, they looked in their fifties.

She picked up a toy and looked at it. It looked ancient. This room must have been left like this forever. If a child had lived there, he or she would be around forty now, by the looks of the toys. If the child even lived that long. Judy somehow concluded there must have been a child, that had died or was taken away from them, many years ago. Interesting!

The girl slept on a mattress in a corner. She had an iPhone in a loose grip, she must've fallen asleep while looking at it. Rich little girl in a house like this? Judy didn't fully understand. But right now it didn't matter. Swiftly she covered the girl's mouth with her left hand, the black leather touching those soft, pink lips... and used her right to inject the liquid into the girl's upper arm that was comfortably uncovered.

The girl made a sound, much like a small bird, then went limp and quiet. Was it too much? Judy hoped not. Better than too little and the girl would run around screaming. She pulled off the covers. The girl was still breathing. Good. She got the girl into a firm grip and tossed her half way across her shoulder. Then she proceeded carrying the girl out of the house.

Dressed all in black, Judy lay silently in wait as day turned to dusk. She had been observing the young girl next door for several days and had finally decided that tonight would be the night she would catch her prey.

The moon slowly rose as the branches of the trees outside left long shadows that crept like monstrous hands along her bedroom wall. A cool breeze rustled the leaves like the sound of quiet whispers. If nature could talk who knows what words it would express of the killer that would soon be lurking in it's shadows.

Dusk had already given way to darkness for several hours before Judy finally rose from her resting place on the bed. She checked her kill kit carefully before leaving the house and quietly snuck into her neighbor's yard. All was quiet within as she crept around to the back of the residence. Everyone had finally gone to bed.

Through her previous observations, Judy knew which room the young girl would be sleeping in that night. Fortunately her neighbors had no security cameras or alarms, making her job of breaking in that much easier. She picked the lock on the back door and silently entered the house...

Her mind had been dark since the day she was born. She had never fully understood it even though she had thought about it a lot, especially when she was younger and her peers seemed to live in a land of endless sunshine and rainbows.

Why did they smile so much, Judy had thought to herself, what were there to smile about?

She knew she was different. Some days she even pictured her as something not human, a fallen angel, a demon. It gave her some peace, at least then she had some kind of explanation. But she also learned what evil was. When people say evil, they picture a dark abyss, pitch black. Judy knew it wasn't like that. Without the contrasts of good, evil turns grey. Grey and boring.

That was the way she lived her life. She suffered. The glimpses of true emotion were few and far between. She loved them. Even when they hurt. At least it was something other than the grey, dull feeling, or lack thereof.

The idea had always been there. When peoples "good" shone onto her "evil", she came to life. If they would see, if they would feel what she had inside, she would come alive for a few seconds, and the contrasts would make her darkness as she wished it to be, not grey but very, very dark. What would upset the most? The death of a child, the slow, painful and remorseless killing of a young one. That would cast the shadow Judy wanted and longed for, in the depths of her soul.

As it was, there was a young girl visiting next door, 12 or 13, not really belonging in the neighborhood, still being there for some reason. Judy had disliked her at once. She was bratty, loud, acting like the world would stop existing without her.

That girl, Judy thought, took up way too much space. How dared she? The world did not belong to her, just because she was well off, just because she wore expensive brands and probably had rich parents. She would be the perfect victim. She did not know the girl's name, but in her mind, she called her Ashlynn, she looked like someone with a stupid name like that.
