Natural vs manipulated Balance

Meh.

Every year 13 000 ginormous flaming balls of rock come almost close enough to the earth to destroy her.

It's a game of cosmic Russian Roulette. It's happened more than once. We'll get wiped out like the dinosaurs eventually, no matter which direction our biocultural adaptations take.

There's a layer of black goo covering most of the earth at the 60 million ya mark in the fossil record. That was the last cataclysmic collision.

Geologists/ paleontologists hypothesize that there was another extinction event around 400 mya.

There have also been a few ice ages within our existence as a species. Not enough to wipe us out, tho.

*Edit: Our sun will also explode some time in the next 25 000 years bc that's what stars do. (I'm not as well versed in the lifespan of stars. I'd have to google for the exact pattern... blue giant- to yellow sun- to red giant- to red dwarf- to black hole was it? Smthg like that.) I wonder if we'll get our shit together enough to find another planet to live on (without destroying it) before humanity gets incinerated?

You're damned science will be the end of us all when God's wrath thunders down. He's probably pissed about how many Asians we've let run around for the past few years

And at least 18000 meteors actually make contact. Not to mention the thousands of volcanic caldera littered across the Earth. And that our geomagnetic field is the only thing preventing solar winds from tearing the atmosphere apart, as was the case for poor Mercury.

However, it's worth remembering that this particular game of cosmic Russian Roulette has been stretched out across the last 4ish billion years. The odds of Earth's destruction eventually is pretty high, the odds of her destruction within our (collective human) lifetime, relatively low.

What is a good metric for balance?

I don't agree with some of your perceptions of norm. Your optimism is encouraging.

I hope the world is as resilient as some as you believe.

"Eco"

I have the sense that all the universe is always in a perfect balance; not to say we should not do what we can to improve upon our condition. The questions I've been asking you have been attempts to eluciate to the idea of what you would consider to be balance. Balance with "eco" is a start, but I am not sure what do be visualizing when you bring up that term.

"The world has always been able to find balance during diversity for millions of years. Mankind is the only species that has the power to disrupt this natural balance. Do you believe humans are capable of finding and maintaining balance?  Or are we destined to fail?"

Yes we are capable of balance, and we'll do by it trial and error. Like nature we're all about balance, and since we ourselves are nature everything we do and achieve is natures way. Even our synthetic materials have been provided to us by nature, so by definition what's considerably unnatural has more to do with modification.

Some would argue we aren't capable of great things, while others would beg to differ. It was us that lit up the globe in the darkness of space where the Earth blocks the sun's light.

Failure itself is part of the spectrum. If we don't evolve into a species that's advanced enough to deflect things like meteors, then the meteor will destroy us. This destruction will serve as a cleansing for the Earth which will burn for millions of years before the storm clears, and all things will be converted into, well, something for the next wave of life to not pay any mind to.
