They seemed be fine with death or maybe even liking the morbid. It is really hard to say. I mean a lot of the greatest horror stories comes from the 1800s. And they did really weird things back then like showing dead bodies at circuses electrocuting them making them jump and everyone was like Oh thats neat.
Death seems a quite recent taboo, but since I'm living in that sort of time, I really cannot imagine things being different.
They say the first real burial places were in the first farmers' homes/huts. They buried the dead under the fireplace to dig him up later to have him live with them as a skull. I don't know how they know that but that sounds weird to me as well.
