She was a reason amongst many others
"Do you have them?"
Nope.
"If not, do you want them someday?"
The answer's kind of a mixed bag. On one hand it'd be a human being that I'd help cultivate, on the other the creature would likely inherit at least one of the mental disorders that I have (if not others). I eventually want one of my own that reflects my genetics, but I feel like it's selfish to potentially put someone else through a life with the defects I have just because of that.
"If you do, have they changed you? Do you think they would?"
I doubt it, mostly from not figuring there's much about me at this point that has room to change.
I’ve looked into adoption very seriously recently, but in the end decided against it.
Because it’s pretty rare for kids to be properly orphaned nowadays, and pregnant teenagers tend to keep or abort their babies when once they would have given them up, you’re left with the kids that social services have taken away from families. They’ve usually been exposed to drug and alcohol abuse while in the womb, and mostly they’re damaged from severe neglect and abuse. I’ve heard stories of babies and young kids that seemed perfectly normal only later to develop serious behaviour problems and learning difficulties, like 5 yr olds covering themselves in faeces, and kids showing very sexualised behaviour.
There is always adopting from abroad, but that costs about $20,000 dollars and takes around 2 years, and most countries have strict laws stating that a child can only be adopted in another country if nobody in their country can adopt it, so again most of the kids have disabilities, behavioural probs, HIV+ etc.
Not that it’s a bad thing to do to adopt a special needs child. But people say ‘oh you can just adopt’ like it’s easy, but when you look into it it’s anything but.
