My head is so full of useless shit.

i learned today that it's still in there, it just gets lost and hidden away. i remembered a number i heard once or  twice several months ago, and i just now needed it today and i was somehow able to remember it perfectly. i think the trick is not to focus on remembering on it but to unfocus your mind and let all the thoughts stream by, and then it'll come to you when you need it.

"I have been unable to retain anything learned for longer than approx. month and a half."

How much effort have you put into retaining these things?

Also, how bad is it really? Can you verbatim relay every single sequence of entire video games, know minute details to power game? Can you recognize various hentai artists purely based on art style? Do you know various URLs for porn and funny links by heart?

From what I understand, during development as a child, your brain reaches for patterns and experiences, grabbing at everything.  Redundancies are present, in order to hardwire the neural path.  This kind of inherent learning by massive iteration and reiteration is clearly present in such things as martial arts, where it really becomes less about thinking or remembering, but turning relentless discipline into an instinct.  Do you think of the words and things you say individually, carefully choosing words and structure, consciously?  Don't the words and speech and conversations just..."come out" with seemingly automatic reflexive action?

There is apparently a storage capacity limit of some kind.  Usually, the massive redundancies you develop and learn from sacrifice some of that storage space for newer thinking.  But, as that runs out, you may experience gaps or ever-more "fuzziness" in memory.

As far as I know, they haven't actually ever figured out what memory even is or its real operational abilities.  Memories, most believe, are actually a reassembly of the experience, not a retrieval of a "file" in memory like a computer or something.  It may be more efficient on space concerns that instead of remembering the whole of the experience as a lump of entire data.  A neuron or maybe a set of them maybe remembers the components of the memory, but calls forth separate memories of phenomena, then reconstructs the memory that way.  This may explain the fuzziness time gives to memories.

There might be better analogies for this, but there ya go...

You've trained your brain to only pick up and retain absolutely useless shit. It's your own fault that your brain is so shit now.

I think that my head must be full. For about a year and a half now, I have been unable to retain anything learned for longer than approx. month and a half. My halfassed explanation for this is that I already have to many useless facts memorized. For instance, there are certain videogames that I know almost everything there is to know about. I have a mental database of Chinese martial arts terminology that never gets used. I have the T station layout in my city memorized, but I ride my bike everywhere. I know a fair amount about hentai and anime and manga, like a massive trove of stored footage and images. But it's useless. I can't apply it to much of anything. People are a conglameration of data they've taken from their experiences in life. I don't know if I want all this data.

"how bad is it really?"

Bad.

"Can you verbatim relay every single sequence of entire video games?"

This one especially yes.

"know minute details to power game?"

This is grammatically broken.

"Can you recognize various hentai artists purely based on art style?"

Yep.

"URLs for porn and funny links by heart?"

Only the site URLs.

I been there. While still liking some of these things, you'll eventually set it aside and move onto other things. In some way shape or form, life will have a way of forcing away the habits that keep you posted of things surrounding these subjects, most likely it will be someone around you, or a situation you're in and you'll become comfortable with that. You'll at some point be highly prone to boredom and when old friends come around, they'll bring up the same old things which you'll be done with, unless you yourself delves into it.

In my case I have people who want to talk about the old pop culture. I came from a time where there was no internet, so for awhile, the shit that was on the TV was off the chain, and I'm still convinced the artworks in those animated presentations were executed much better than the crap the kids are watching today. Even Disney's greatest animated works are from that era, and they haven't delivered anything good since. The Disney Pixar stuff is all outsourced and paid for by Disney.

I'm talking about Hasbro and what they have become in this modern age, while there are other companies that pulled off entertainment that still left a stain for generations to come, unlike the disposable content recent teens had to watch, but then again, they had the internet, so legendary mainstream content wouldn't be as motivated to deliver the way it once did.

Coming from the days where cars were just getting smaller and sleeker, and we had long lines Banks, I can recall so much detail. One time at this large dinner/dance event, I lucked out and was a contestant on a stage game. I answered every question, including identifying a soundbite of the Dallas theme they played for fractions of a second. It was like a quick beep, and I told them with certainty what it was. They almost never wanted to give me my prize no one else had a chance. It came to a point where they actually pulled one of these...

They ask a question....

Me: Raises hand

them: Does anyone know the answer ?

Me: Raises hand higher

them: Anyone ?

......

I ruined the fun of it there was no point in going on. They looked bent, and the whole place was like "Who is this guy ?" Still I choose my prize like they promised and I took the TV.

I still know how to write commands for a Commodore 64. It get's crazy what useless information we carry, but I think they are all a part of out making as well as references to memories.
