Interesting.

After though; do you think they should be imprisoned, put back into society  or in rehabilitation centers?

I think the whole mutilation of genitals thing is more for the repeaters so obviously the first 1 or 2 times they should be in jail but after the third which is when the genital mutilation happens they should not be in jail for the simple fact that they can not rape anyone anymore.

Put in jail for their sentence and then rehabilitated with classes, inform their neighbors of their crimes.

Oh wait, we already do that.

Should they be:

-> Placed in rehabilitation centers?

-> Executed?

-> Imprisoned for life?

Do you think the statement 'Once a sex offender always sex offender is correct' which supports the idea that sex offenders will always re-offend once they're out and that they can never be 'cured'.

"Do you think the statement 'Once a sex offender always sex offender is correct' which supports the idea that sex offenders will always re-offend once they're out and that they can never be 'cured'."

Some publications from this year may help answer that question.

"The sample included offenders who were completing a prison-based sexual offense treatment program during the last 18 months of their incarceration. Approximately 40% of the sample recidivated in some way, including 6% sexually, within the 6-year follow-up time." (Source)

"'Through anecdotal evidence, we know that modern treatment lowers recidivism, and the meta-analysis backs that up now,' Prentky says. 'We are unlikely to find a large treatment effect as long as the re-offense rates for untreated sex offenders are relatively low, for example, around 15 percent.'

'Psychologists are essentially being asked to determine what level of risk an individual poses to a community even though there is no definitive way to know for certain,' LaFond says. 'They're being asked to balance that risk with the individual liberty concerns of an offender. Science has come up with tools to help them, but it's still a huge responsibility and a terrible burden.'" (Source)

"The effectiveness of sex offender treatment programs continues to generate misinformation and disagreement. Some literature reviews conclude that treatment does not reduce recidivism while others suggest that specific types of treatment may warrant optimism. The principal purpose of this study is to update the most recent meta-analyses of sex offender treatments and to compare the findings with an earlier study that reviewed the meta-analytic studies published from 1995 to 2002. More importantly, this study examines effect sizes across different age populations and effect sizes across various sex offender treatments. Results of this review of meta-analyses suggest that sex offender treatments can be considered as "proven" or at least "promising," while age of participants and intervention type may influence the success of treatment for sex offenders. The implications of these findings include achieving a broader understanding of intervention moderators, applying such interventions to juvenile and adult offenders, and outlining future areas of research." For sex offenders, rates of recidivism are lower, and sexual re-offense rates substantially lower when compared to national averages for recidivism:

"Bureau of Justice Statistics studies have found high rates of recidivism among released prisoners. One study tracked 404,638 prisoners in 30 states after their release from prison in 2005.[1] The researchers found that:

  • Within three years of release, about two-thirds (67.8 percent) of released prisoners were rearrested.
  • Within five years of release, about three-quarters (76.6 percent) of released prisoners were rearrested.
  • Of those prisoners who were rearrested, more than half (56.7 percent) were arrested by the end of the first year.
  • Property offenders were the most likely to be rearrested, with 82.1 percent of released property offenders arrested for a new crime compared with 76.9 percent of drug offenders, 73.6 percent of public order offenders and 71.3 percent of violent offenders."

Pedophiles are not treated well in prison. I imagine both therapy as well as abuse in prison make pedophiles less likely to re-offend. Can pedophiles be "cured?"

"'These people felt they could snuff out the desire, or shame me into denying it existed," he said. "But it's as intrinsic as the next person's heterosexuality.'

In the laboratory, researchers are coming to the same conclusion.

Like many forms of sexual deviance, pedophilia once was thought to stem from psychological influences early in life. Now, many experts view it as a sexual orientation as immutable as heterosexuality or homosexuality. It is a deep-rooted predisposition — limited almost entirely to men — that becomes clear during puberty and does not change.

The best estimates are that between 1% and 5% of men are pedophiles, meaning that they have a dominant attraction to prepubescent children.

Not all pedophiles molest children. Nor are all child molesters pedophiles. Studies show that about half of all molesters are not sexually attracted to their victims. They often have personality disorders or violent streaks, and their victims are typically family members.

By contrast, pedophiles tend to think of children as romantic partners and look beyond immediate relatives. They include chronic abusers familiar from the headlines — Catholic priests, coaches and generations of Boy Scout leaders.

Other pedophiles are 'good people who are struggling,' said Dr. Fred Berlin, a psychiatrist who heads the Johns Hopkins Sexual Behaviors Consultation Unit. 'They're tortured souls fighting like heck not to do this. We do virtually nothing in terms of reaching out to these folks. We drive it underground.'" (Source)

Pedophiles are benign as a group when it comes to sexual offences. Most pedophiles are ordinary law-abiding citizens with consciences, who happen to have a biological attraction to children. This particular group needs more resources for help, in my opinion. Perhaps pharmaceutical drugs which can reduce their desires, or re-wire them into a socially acceptable form.

Punishment for sex offenders should be relative to criminal record and psychological analysis. Inmates with AsPD (antisocial personality disorder) tend to re-offend. However, therapy with the correct approach has been demonstrated to be useful for this group, and lives can be turned around. Rehabilitation centers for persons with AsPD may be more conducive to helping those people than a prison setting. As for the psychopaths, no one has figured out how to handle them yet. Psychopaths who undergo traditional forms of therapy have a higher recidivism rate than those who do not. I do not know what the best way for the legal system to handle such persons is.

Sex offenders are fine, in the brutal cases they can get 6months in prison.

Parents should watch their kids, as for the paedo parents i am not sure, it pretty much happens anyway and is hard to discover. Maybe the kids should be allowed to kill their parents withouth getting punishement for it?

I am against all types of regulated torture as a punishment for those people.

The pleasure they feel while doing it may not be just a matter of genital pleasure. They may only need their hands to get a thrill out of how the victims (specifically kids) themselves are responding to it, either as some sort of power thing or to proxy an event from earlier in their lives.

So hey, lets lop those off too.

I am against anything mutilating or life threatening being done to anyone as legal punishment.

I can see how things getting personal might make one want to take the matter into one's own hands though, I would too under some circumstances to be fully honest.

Interesting read.

What really go to me though was "These people felt they could snuff out the desire, or shame me into denying it existed," he said. "But it's as intrinsic as the next person's heterosexuality.".

Scary.
