I just finished a talk on my research topic and I realized that about half of my audience fell asleep. This made me wonder about a couple of things.
There is a lot of discussion on engaging the audience, using visuals to capture their attention and performing in an entertaining way. Finland is known for having the best education in the world, one reason is they use very colorful school books which supposedly make students more engaged, another reason is that the teachers are highly educated. It might be more accurate to say that the Finnish education system is good not because it creates good students but because the learning system aims to make everything easy to learn and enjoyable.
I believe making studying easy is a way of pampering students. I believe this makes people unable to learn harder concepts, such as the ones presented in scientific publications. Scientific publications' aim is to present results of various studies. They are not meant to be engaging nor is there a lot of effort made into making them easy to understand. They are the main way information is being conveyed to other scientists, and their aim is to be brief and factual.
Having said that, I believe the 'good teachers' and 'good learning material' of today are in fact hampering the process of learning. I believe it makes people lazy and unable to think for themselves. On another front, I believe that the need for more and more engaging and entertaining presentations is slowing down science.
I can understand popular science, although they usually serve only to confuse people and play loose with the truth, but I do not think it should have a place in real science.
